Commentary
And when - glorified and exalted is He - He had made most of the soldiers of this noble Prophet from the angels; He supported him with them in both situations of peace and conflict; and He protected him from those who intended harm against him in the honored Makkah; and beyond it with them; He reminded him of that; by His saying - referring to what (p-116) you estimate: "And We did not send down upon his people before their killing him any soldiers from the heaven; to prevent them from that; as We did with you; when Abu Jahl intended to kill you with a stone; while you were prostrating at the House; and others besides that; of what is detailed in the biographies; and as for after the migration, then in the Battle of 'the Confederates'; when We sent upon them a wind; and soldiers that drove them back disappointed; and in the Battle of 'Uhud'; and 'Badr'; and 'Hunayn'; and others besides that -: ﴿And We did not send down﴾; by what we have of greatness; ﴿upon his people﴾; meaning: the companion of 'Yas'; ﴿after him﴾; meaning: after his killing; and He emphasized the negation with His saying: ﴿any soldiers﴾; and He affirmed the intended meaning with His saying: ﴿from the heaven﴾; meaning: for their destruction; and He affirmed that sending the heavenly soldiers is a matter that is specific to him ﷺ because it is for wisdoms that relate to victory without extermination; for they appear in the forms of humans; and they perform their actions; and as for the punishment of extermination, then the divine tradition has been established that it does not occur with more than one of the angels; because it is more indicative of power; and for that reason He said (the Most High): ﴿And We were not to send down﴾; meaning: that was not from our tradition; and it is not correct in our wisdom that the punishment of extermination be with a large number of soldiers;
