Commentary
And when the context made it clear that he said: 'So, I have followed them in the worship of Allah'; he built upon this his saying - as a response to those who blame him for that; and as an encouragement for what he has chosen for himself; and as a reprimand for those who reject it -: (p-111) ﴿And what﴾; meaning: And what is ﴿for me﴾; in that I ﴿do not worship the One who created me﴾; meaning: and to Him I return; for Him is my beginning; and my end; and why do you not worship the One who created you; ﴿and to Him﴾; meaning: not to anyone else ﴿you will be returned﴾; like that? For He deserves worship; in gratitude for what He has bestowed in the beginning; and in fear of the consequences in the end; the verse is from the intertwining: the omission of 'and to Him I return' first; for what is indicated by the second; and his denial of them second; by what is indicated by the first; from his denial of himself; to attract them by showing fairness; and avoiding the explicit statement of disagreement; and in it is a reminder to them of the necessity of gratitude; and a threat regarding the commission of disbelief.
