Commentary
They said; meaning: the messengers; "Your omen"; meaning: your bad luck that has befallen you with affliction; "is with you"; and it is your evil deeds; from which comes your denial of the truth.
And when it became evident that nothing appeared from them except what necessitates, upon correct consideration, good fortune and blessing; which is the reminder of Allah; in whose hand is all good; they denied their own bad omens; in a clear manner that there is no reason for that other than it; so they said: "Is it because you were reminded of Allah that you have taken us as an omen?" (p-109) Meaning: Is it for the sake of the reminder of Allah that you have taken us as a bad omen? And since that cannot be a reason for bad omens in any way; they turned away from it; warning them that the source of their bad luck is their excessiveness; nothing else; so they said: "Rather"; meaning: the matter is not as you claim that the reminder is a reason for bad omens; rather "you are a people"; meaning: you have been deceived by what Allah has given you of strength to act upon what you desire; "excessive"; meaning: your habit is to go beyond limits; and tyranny; so you were punished for that.
