Commentary
They said; meaning: the people of the village: "What are you"; meaning: even if your number increases; "except"; and when the exception negated the denial, the suspicion of what they were involved in was removed; thus their action ceased; so his saying was raised: "A human like us"; meaning: what is the reason for your distinction in being messengers over us? And when the implication was: "So you have not been sent to us with anything"; they added to it their saying: "And what has the Most Merciful sent down"; meaning: the general mercy; for the universality of His mercy, along with our equality in His servitude, necessitates that He equalizes between us in mercy; so He does not single you out with anything over us; and they emphasized the denial with their saying: "of anything."
And when the coming upon what was mentioned was susceptible to error and the like; they said - pushing back against that -: "Indeed"; meaning: not; "You are nothing but liars"; meaning: in the present; and in the end;.
