Commentary
And when the greatest of the objectives of the discourse is to console the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in their hesitance to hasten to believe in him; along with his supplication with the wise Book; to the straight path; and since participating in calamities is the greatest consolation; he replaced his saying: "When it came to her"; detailing that coming; his saying - attributing it to himself, glorified and exalted is He - for it being greater in consolation -: "When We sent"; meaning: based on the greatness we possess; and since the purpose of the message is its companions; he said: "To them two"; meaning: so that one of them may support the other; and it would be stronger for their matter; so they informed them of their sending to them; as if they said: We are two messengers to you; so that you may believe in Allah; "But they denied them"; meaning: despite what they had of the signs; for it is known that we do not send a messenger except that he has with him signs that are similar to what humanity has believed in; whether it was from us; without an intermediary; or through our messenger; as was the case for Al-Tufail ibn Amr Al-Dusi; the one of light; when he went to his people; and asked the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to have a sign; and it was a light on his forehead; then he asked for it to be in another part of his body; and it was in his whip.
And when the reinforcement for a matter is stronger for its significance; and aids what is intended from it; this caused his saying - omitting the object; for its understanding from the context; and because the purpose is to demonstrate the ability to carry out the action; and to direct it in all that is intended for it -: "So We strengthened"; meaning: so We established honor; which is strength; and intensity; and dominance; for our matter; or for our messenger; due to what befell them of weakness from the denial; and what we intended of honor was achieved - as indicated by the reading of Abu Bakr; from Asim; with the lightening of "with a third" (p-106) We sent him with what We sent them with; "So they said"; meaning: the three after they came to them; and their insistence on denial became apparent to them; confirming according to what they saw of their denial: "Indeed, we are to you"; meaning: not to others; "messengers."
