Commentary
﴿Indeed, the devil﴾; that is: the one who is consumed by anger; the one who is far from good; ﴿for you﴾; that is: specifically; for he is in utmost emptiness to harm you; so strive to escape from him; ﴿an enemy﴾; by directing all his schemes towards you; and by what has preceded for him with your father Adam - blessings and peace be upon him -; by what his harm has reached you; and also: "Whoever opposes your father has opposed you." (p-12) And since his enmity requires struggle; because he comes to man from the direction of desires; he expressed it in the form of causation; so he said: ﴿So take him﴾; that is: with all your effort; ﴿an enemy﴾; and Allah is for you a protector; so take Him as a protector; by striving for what angers the devil; by opposing him in all that he wants and commands; and by intentionally doing what pleases the Most Merciful; and what He has guided you to; and commanded you with; so you adhere to it; Al-Qushayri said: And no one can withstand his enmity except by constantly seeking help from the Lord; for He does not overlook your enmity; so do not overlook your Lord for a moment; then he explained that by saying: ﴿Indeed, he only calls his party﴾; that is: those whom he whispers to; so he exposes them to follow him; and to turn away from Allah; ﴿to be﴾; by following him; a firmly established being; ﴿from the companions of the blazing fire﴾; this is his goal; he has no other goal; but he strives to obscure that from them; by establishing in their souls a side of hope; and making them forget a side of fear; and showing them that repentance is in their hands; and delaying it for them; with the spaciousness of hope; and the prolongation of the term; for the corruption of deeds; and the Most Merciful - glorified and exalted is He - indeed calls His servants to be among the people of bliss: ﴿And Allah invites to the abode of peace﴾ [Yunus: 25]
