Tafsir for verse: 35:44
44Did they not travel in the land and see how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than these in power. Allah is not such that something in the heavens or the earth can frustrate Him. Surely He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful.

Commentary

And when it was clarified that their condition necessitates it; and there must be a consequence upon them; for what has been established from the days of Allah; and he denied that against them; and the estimation was: "Did they not hear the news of the former ones that were bitter; and their continuous conditions; without any exception at all that whoever denied a Messenger was taken?" So he said - adding to it; as a testimony to the report about His Sunnah with the former ones by what reminds of their traces -: ﴿Did they not travel﴾; meaning: in what has passed of time; ﴿in the earth﴾; meaning: which they struck in the markets by traveling to it; in the Levant; and Yemen; and Iraq; ﴿so that they may observe﴾; meaning: so that it may cause them from that travel to have renewed observation; and consideration; one day of the days; for indeed the wise one is he who when he sees something reflects upon it until it is known what his condition's tongue expresses; if what has occurred from his saying is hidden from him; and he indicated by his use of the interrogative style that it is due to its greatness that it has surpassed its likes; thus it deserves to be questioned about its condition; ﴿What was the end of﴾; meaning: the last of ﴿those﴾; and when the consequences of destruction were in some of what has passed of time; he affirmed the connection; so he said: ﴿before them﴾; meaning: in whatever condition their taking was; so that they may know that they were not taken except by denying the Messengers; so they may fear that they do like their actions; and their condition may be like their condition; and this is the meaning of "Yasin": ﴿that they do not return to them﴾ [Yasin: 31]; equally; as will come, if Allah (the Exalted) wills, its explanation; and when the context was for their being characterized by the two strengths of outward arrogance; and inwardly; from harmful deceit; he empowered the strength of those whom he frightened with a similar outcome; by describing them as the most severe; in a present condition; so he said: ﴿And they were﴾; meaning: We destroyed them for their denying Our Messengers; while they were ﴿stronger than them﴾; meaning: than these; ﴿in strength﴾; in the strengths of arrogance; and deceit; dragging after disgrace to the Fire.

And when the estimation was: "So what has Allah's command made incapable of any nation among them; nor the command of any one from a nation; when they denied their Messenger; and no ally for Him failed; nor did an enemy profit for Him"; he added to it his saying - affirming; indicating the denial of the disbelievers in their cutting off that their religion does not change; and that they will never be defeated; for what they have of multitude; and capability; and what the Muslims have of fewness; and weakness -: ﴿And Allah was not﴾; meaning: He who has all greatness; and he emphasized the totality in negation; by his saying: ﴿to make Him incapable﴾; meaning: intending to make Him incapable; and when the will of incapacity was negated in Him, incapacity was negated all the more; and he emphasized the affirmation by his saying: ﴿of anything﴾; meaning: little; or great; and he included what our perception reaches; by his saying: ﴿in the heavens﴾; meaning: the direction of the high; and he emphasized by repeating the negation; so he said: ﴿nor in the earth﴾; meaning: the direction of the low; and when the origin of incapacity is ignorance; he explained by his saying - affirming what was mentioned at the beginning of the verse -: ﴿Indeed, He was﴾; meaning: eternally and forever; ﴿All-Knowing﴾; meaning: encompassing in knowledge; ﴿All-Powerful﴾; meaning: complete in power; so He does not intend anything except that it is.
