Commentary
And when He clarified the insignificance of the idols and all that they associated with Him, in relation to the majesty of His greatness, and they were unable to claim partnership in creation in any of that; there were sometimes among them, or from others, those who would dare to claim it. The people had come to know something of the celestial changes, such as the rising and setting of the sun and the eclipses. They had no knowledge of anything regarding earthquakes and the midday sun. He said, clarifying His greatness, glorified and exalted is He, after belittling the matter of their partners; making it a miracle; threatening them for their daring in this great falsehood; clarifying the blessing of not hastening them to destruction. He confirmed this because among the people are those who deny it; they are the deniers; and among them are those whose actions, even if they acknowledge it, are the actions of the deniers. This is one who denies something of His power, such as resurrection: "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One who has all the attributes of perfection; "holds the heavens"; meaning: despite their vastness and height; "and the earth"; meaning: despite its expanse and distance from cohesion; as they observe; holding it in a way that prevents it from "shifting"; meaning: with a great shaking and a significant tremor; or a shifting without cohesion; because their stability upon what they are upon is without comparison, were it not for the lofty power of His ability and the overwhelming honor of His greatness. So if you claim, out of stubbornness, that your partners cannot create for a reason among the reasons, then call them to remove what He has created - glorified is He.
And when this was evidence that they are two created things that are transient, He followed it with what is clearer than that. He said, expressing with a tool of possibility: "And if they were to shift"; meaning: with a shaking or destruction; "Indeed"; meaning: what "holds them"; and He confirmed the totality of the negation by saying: "from anyone"; and when the intention was that no one besides Him - glorified is He - can hold them at any time among the times, even if it is little; He established the connection by saying: "from after Him"; meaning: after their removal from Him. Rather, when the earth is shaken, everything upon it trembles; and the idols are among them. This clearly indicates that the partners are acted upon, not acting.
And when the context leans more towards encouraging turning to Him alone than towards threatening, it was as if it was said: He is worthy of removing them for the great sins committed by their people and the severe crimes. He said, in response to that; and He confirmed it; because the ruling regarding what the deniers commit, despite its enormity and their multitude, is beyond the capacity of minds: "Indeed, He was"; meaning: eternally and forever; "forbearing"; meaning: it is not His way to hasten punishment for the sinners; because He does not hasten except for one who fears missing out; thus, he seizes opportunities. He encouraged turning away from sin, indicating that He does not have what the wise of mankind have, of the tightness that leads them to not forgive when they become angry after prolonged patience, by saying: "Forgiving"; meaning: erasing the sins of whoever turns to Him and comes with acknowledgment of Him; so He does not punish him nor reproach him.
