4(O Prophet,) if they reject you, (it is not something new, because) many messengers have been rejected before you. It is to Allah that all matters are to be referred.

Commentary

And when He confirmed them on what had preceded; and concluded with the Oneness; which is the first principle of the foundations of the religion; He alerted that it is the intended purpose in itself; by mentioning what follows it in the second principle; which is the message; of belief; and disbelief; He said - lamenting the poor reception of the Quraysh to His signs; and their criticism of His clear proofs; comforting him ﷺ; (p-10) adding to what you might estimate: "If they believe you, then they are deserving of belief; for what has been established by that from the evidences; and what has been testified by it from the objectives; and the means" -: ﴿And if they deny you﴾; meaning: out of stubbornness; and a lack of concern for the consequences; so be patient with your brothers; ﴿For indeed﴾; meaning: because it has indeed ﴿been denied by messengers﴾; meaning: oh how many messengers! And he built the action for the unknown; because the comfort is based on the occurrence of denial; not specifying the denier; and he negated that He would send another after His existence; by saying: ﴿before you﴾; and he singled out denial by mention; out of concern for the comfort; alerting that most are denied; Al-Qushayri said: And in this is an indication for the wise; and the people of hearts; along with the common folk; and the outsiders; from this method; for they accept from them only a little; and the people of truths are always among them in enduring harm; and the common folk are closer to this method than the ascetic readers.

And when the estimation is a negation of the amazement at the denial that occurs without a correct measure: "For from Allah; who has no command for anyone with Him; all matters are issued"; He added to it His saying - threatening those who opposed His command -: ﴿And to Allah﴾; meaning: alone; for to Him belong all matters; ﴿All matters are returned﴾; meaning: in reality; and in meaning; so be patient; and return the matter to us; by leaving the causes; except what We command you with; as your brothers from the messengers did.
