Tafsir for verse: 35:39
39He is the One who has made you successors (of the past generations) on the earth. So the one who becomes infidel, his infidelity will go against himself. Their infidelity adds nothing to the infidels but anger from their Lord, and their infidelity adds nothing to the infidels but loss.

Commentary

And when the one who creates something is more knowledgeable about it; and the perfection of his craftsmanship indicates the completeness of the ability of its maker; and the completeness of his ability is necessitated by the completeness of his knowledge; He said: ﴿He is﴾; meaning: alone; not your partners; nor others; ﴿the One who made you﴾; meaning: O people; ﴿successors﴾; the plural of "successor"; and he is the one who comes after a person with what was established by him; and the successors are the plural of "successor"; this was said by Al-Asbahani; and Al-Qushayri said: The people of every era are successors to those who preceded them; so from a people, they have beauty for their predecessors; and from a people, they are the lowly and the base; the virtuous of their time have a trial; and the lowly are a trial for their time.

And when the intention was to weaken the matter of their partners; and it is achieved by stripping them of their ability over what He - glorified and exalted is He - has enabled the worshippers from the earth; He included the neighbor; indicating that they, despite their multitude; and the extension of their times; do not fill their dwelling with His management; for the death of every generation and the succession of those after them from them; and if He had not killed them, the earth would not have contained them with procreation; over a long time; and they are originally a small piece of its soil; so He said: ﴿in the earth﴾; meaning: in what you are in of it; not other than it; you act in it with what you are able to; and if He willed, He would not have allowed you to act in it; so it is His right that you thank Him; and do not deny Him.

And when it was established that this is a blessing from Him; He granted them a duration in which to remember those who remember; from this resulted His saying: ﴿So whoever denies﴾; meaning: after knowing that Allah is the One who enabled him; no one else; and he belittled this noble blessing; ﴿then upon him﴾; meaning: specifically; ﴿is his denial﴾; meaning: his harm; and when the existence of a thing upon another is susceptible to matters; He clarified its state with His saying - confirming for the sake of those who imagine that the expansion of the world upon the wicked is a profit; and an honor from Allah to him; ﴿And not﴾; meaning: while it is that He does not ﴿increase the disbelievers﴾; meaning: those who cover the truth; ﴿their disbelief﴾; meaning: that which they are clad in; thinking that it will bring them happiness; and they are firmly established in it; unable to escape from it; and for this reason, He did not say: "does not increase whoever disbelieves"; because his disbelief may not be firmly established; so he may convert; ﴿with their Lord﴾; meaning: the One who is good to them; ﴿except with aversion﴾; meaning: because He treats them as one who hates; and despises; with the utmost hatred and contempt.

And when the intention of these attributes in relation to Allah (the Exalted) is their utmost; and the mention of them is merely a depiction of them in their most horrific forms; for the increase of repulsion from their causes; and they used to marry the wives of their fathers; while they called it the marriage of aversion; He indicated that they do not care about the aversion to the benefactor; so He said - mentioning the ultimate goal; clarifying that the focus of their attention is the financial loss; belittling their ambitions; increasing in their reprimand -: ﴿And does not increase the disbelievers﴾; meaning: those entrenched in the attribute of covering the truth; ﴿their disbelief except with loss﴾; meaning: in this world; and the Hereafter; in wealth; and the soul; and this is the end of what the one who hates does to the one who is hated.
