And when He - glorified and exalted is He - was knowledgeable of what He negated and what He affirmed, He explained that, establishing the reason for the continuity of their punishment. And that it is in proportion to their disbelief, as He, the Exalted, said: "And the recompense of an evil deed is an evil deed like it" [Ash-Shura: 40]. By His saying - affirming; indicating that it is not necessary to train the soul upon it, due to its difficulty, for the soul stands with the tangible: "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses everything with power and knowledge; "the Knower of the Unseen"; and when the aspect of the highness is more profound in the unseen, He said: "the heavens and the earth"; thus, this resulted in His saying - affirming; for it is among the most astonishing of the unseen, for often what is in a person's self is hidden from them; and Allah - the Exalted - is knowledgeable of it. Or it is an explanation for what preceded -: "Indeed, He is Knowing"; meaning: possessing profound knowledge; "of what is in the breasts"; meaning: before its owners know it, when it is purely unseen. So He knows that if your lifespans were extended, you would never turn back from disbelief. And if you were returned, you would return to that which you were forbidden from. And that there is no hope for your righteousness. Therefore, He commands the angel to write at the time of the soul's blowing into the child that he is either wretched or happy, before he has any thought at all. And perhaps he is at the height of what he can do in turning towards good in action and intention, then he is sealed for evil. And perhaps he is contrary to that, at the height of corruption, not leaving any polytheism or other sins until he commits them; and he is, with Allah, happy, for what He knows of his intention after that, when he turns his heart towards Him; thus he is sealed for good. So he will be among the people of Paradise. As for the thoughts after their existence in the hearts, the angel and the devil may have insight into them.
