Commentary
And when He made clear their punishment; He made clear their despair; so He said: ﴿And they﴾; meaning: He did that to them while they ﴿are crying out in it﴾; meaning: they are producing cries in it to the utmost of their ability in shouting; with weeping and wailing; and when He made that clear; He explained their saying in their cries with His saying: ﴿Our Lord﴾; meaning: they say: O You who are gracious to us; ﴿Bring us out﴾; meaning: from the Fire; ﴿We will do righteous deeds﴾; then they confirmed it; and explained it; (p-63) and clarified it with their saying - in a manner of regret; and acknowledgment of error; or because they thought their deeds were righteous -: ﴿Other than what we used to﴾; meaning: to the utmost of our effort; ﴿We used to do﴾; so they abandoned the softening and the deeds according to it at the time of its benefit; and they employed it when it had passed; so it did not benefit them; rather it was said - in response to them; as a confirmation for them; and a reprimand; and a scolding -: ﴿Did not﴾; meaning: Were you not in the abode of deeds capable of that by means of intellect and strength? Did We not ﴿give you long lives﴾; meaning: extend your lifetimes; along with granting you intellects; and We did not hasten to take you; ﴿What﴾; meaning: a time; ﴿to remember in it﴾; and what encompasses every lifetime in which the accountable one can rectify their affairs; except that the reprimand in the long is greater; and He indicated by the manifestation of greatness that there is no hope other than Him - glorified and exalted is He - in extending life.
And when reflection after resurrection is not beneficial; because after the veil is lifted; He expressed it in the past; so He said: ﴿Whoever remembers﴾; informing that He has sealed the record of the rememberers; so no one is added to them; and the time referred to is said to be sixty years; this was said by Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them both -; and Al-Bukhari titled it in the beginning of the chapters on softening; without attributing it to anyone; and Ahmad ibn Mani' narrated from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever Allah gives a lifespan of sixty years; then Allah has excused him regarding his lifetime."; and Al-Tirmidhi; and Ibn Majah; and Abu Ya'la narrated from Abu Huraira also - may Allah be pleased with him - from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "The lifetimes of my Ummah are between sixty and seventy; and the least of them is one who exceeds that."
And when He indicated to the proof of reason at the beginning and continuously; He pointed to the evidences of transmission that alert to what reason has fallen short of; so He said - expressing in the past; explicitly stating the intended meaning; in conjunction with the meaning: "Did We not give you long lives"; which is "We have given you long lives" -: ﴿And the warning came to you﴾; meaning: from Me; through the messengers; and the books; supporting the intellects with the rational evidence.
And when it became evident that their punishment does not cease; He said: "So taste"; meaning: what We have prepared for you of punishment is everlasting forever. And since it is customary that whoever loses hope in his adversary resorts to seeking help against him; this led to His saying: "So what"; and the original was: "for you"; but He made it apparent; linking the judgment to the description; for generalization; so He said: "for the wrongdoers"; meaning: those who place things in other than their rightful places; "from a supporter"; meaning: one who aids them; and strengthens their hands; so there is no escape for you from this tasting; and this is general for every wrongdoer; for indeed, whoever is established for him is supported against him; because his wrongdoing weakens every day; and the truth strengthens and grows at all times.
