Commentary
And when this was confirmed by what indicated his purity, he preceded the mention of the disagreement concerning it. And when he mentioned, glorified and exalted is He, what is most prevalent in it, water, from what has transformed into something far removed from water, and he followed it with pure soil, he concluded with what is most prevalent in soil, from what has transformed into that which is in the utmost distance from soil. He said: "And among the people"; meaning: those who move, by action and choice; "and the animals"; and when the term animal originally referred to what crawls on the earth, then it became commonly used for what is ridden, he said: "and the cattle"; so that it encompasses all explicitly. "Different are its colors"; meaning: the colors of that part which it made clear by "from"; "likewise"; meaning: like the fruits and the lands. From it, there is that which has one color, and from it, there is that which has multiple colors. Although all that has been mentioned is from the lands of homogeneous entities, differing in attributes, and its relation to them and to the heavens is one. So where is the ruling of the natures?
And when it was established by this proof that He, glorified is He, acts by choice, He does what He wills, and to whom He wills, what He wills. He makes the same thing a light for one people and blindness for another. And this was a motivation for serving Him, a deterrent from His might, glorified and exalted is He, for everyone with understanding. And the context was for warning those who fear the unseen. It was established that the warning by this Qur'an is for a people whom Allah intended their fear, and for a people whom Allah intended their hardness. The soul turned to seeking a law by which it can be known who fears and who does not fear. So he said - as a means of inference from that, to dispel the thought of one who assumes that it is possible for a person to be an ignorant ally -: "Indeed, those who fear Allah"; meaning: the one who possesses all perfection, and there is no perfection for anyone else except from Him. And it indicated that everyone other than Him is in His grasp and under His control, by His saying: "of His servants". Then he mentioned the place of benefit, which is the one whose warning is beneficial. He said: "the scholars"; meaning: no one else, even if they are worshippers, even if their worship reaches what it may reach. Because no one fears anyone except with knowledge of him, and the ignorant does not know Him. So the meaning became as if it were said: "Indeed, the warning is only beneficial for the people of fear; and only the scholars fear"; and the scholar is the jurist who acts upon his knowledge. Al-Suhrawardi said, in the third chapter of his 'Awarif': Knowledge is negated from one who does not fear Allah, just as if he said: "Only a Baghdadi enters the house"; it negates the entry of anyone other than the Baghdadi into the house. This is the meaning of the famous reading.
And when the cause of fear is glorification and reverence, and everyone does not revere except whom he reveres, and it has been established that the scholars revere Allah, and the cause of their reverence for Him is His reverence for them, this was the meaning of the other reading. So it was as if it were said: "Indeed, the warning is only beneficial for the one who reveres Allah; and Allah reveres him for his knowledge." And our Sheikh, the verifier of his time, the judge of the Shafi'iyya in Egypt, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Qayyati was asked about the interpretation of this reading. He paused for a moment, then raised his head and said:
I fear you in awe, and you have no power over me, but the eye is full of its beloved. And when it was established by this context that He - glorified and exalted is He - is the doer of these opposing things; He explained that to indicate that His power over all that He desires is like His power over it; by His saying - for the sake of emphasis; to alert that He - glorified and exalted is He - nothing is difficult for Him; and that He is worthy of being feared; and for this reason, He revealed the greatest name: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: the encompassing of majesty and honor; ﴿Mighty﴾; meaning: dominant over all of His affairs; and when this was intimidating from His might; necessitating fear of Him; to make it clear that He prevents those who do not fear from His mercy; He encouraged them by His saying: ﴿Forgiving﴾; that He erases the sins of whom He wills from them; so let him turn to Him with his heart; and this is also one of the meanings of honor.
