Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' And when he (blessings and peace be upon him) was greatly saddened by their denial; as a mercy for them; and a fear that this might be due to a shortcoming in his state; and the estimation was: 'If they believe you, then that is their share in this world and the Hereafter'; he turned to him - as a consolation for him; and a solace - with his saying: ﴿And if they deny you, then﴾; meaning: so take comfort; for indeed ﴿those who denied﴾; and when the deniers were some of the people; it was necessary for that to be at some point in time; this was indicated by the preposition; so he said: ﴿Before them﴾; meaning: what their messengers brought them from Allah. And when the acceptance of the messengers of what came to them from Allah; and the negation of any shortcoming in their conveying it; indicated their high status; and the lowly state of the deniers from the nations; and all of that indicated the completeness of Allah's (glorified and exalted is He) power in differentiating between the creation; he said - indicating the two matters of exaltation; and lowliness; as a continuation; answering one who might have said: Was their denial out of obstinacy; or due to a deficiency in the message? -: ﴿Their messengers came to them﴾; meaning: the previous nations; ﴿with clear signs﴾; meaning: the clear signs indicating the truth of the message; and when belief in the book is necessary for everyone who has received his message; and the proportion of denial to all the nations is a surprising matter; it was fitting for the matter to be emphasized; so that it would not be thought that they only denied due to the absence of the book; so he emphasized by repeating the preposition; (p-٤٣) so he said: ﴿And with the scriptures﴾; meaning: the written matters; from the scrolls; and similar things from the traditions; and secrets; ﴿and with the book﴾; meaning: the type of book; like the Torah; and the Gospel; ﴿that gives light﴾; meaning: clear in itself; clarifying the path of good; and evil; just as you came to your people with something similar; and although your path is clearer; and your book is more radiant; and more dazzling; and more apparent; and more famous.
