Commentary
And when He mentioned - glorified is He - one of their two origins; the different types of soil; He mentioned the other origin; the water which is more intensely mixed than the soil; mentioning the difference between the two types that branch out into many types; alerting to His action by choice; and denying anyone who equates Him - glorified is He - with anything; until he associates Him with it; with the separation; which there is nothing after it; while the case is that He differentiates between these tangible things for a certain separation; so He said: ﴿And the two seas are not alike﴾; and when the alif and lam are for the definite; He clarified it by saying - indicating the sweet -: ﴿This is fresh﴾; meaning: good; sweet; delightful; suitable for nature; ﴿and salty﴾; meaning: of great freshness; ﴿Its drink is pleasant﴾; meaning: enjoyable; agreeable; such that when it is drunk, it passes through the throat; and does not stop; rather it is easy to take it in; and swallow it; due to the pleasure and suitability for nature; ﴿And this is salty and bitter﴾; meaning: it combines saltiness with bitterness; so its drink is not permissible; rather if it is drunk, it would hurt the throat; and ignite in the stomach what is like fire; and the intended meaning is that He distinguished between them - glorified is He - after bringing them together in the apparent and hidden of the earth; and did not allow one of them to transgress against the other; rather when it is dug on the side of the salty sea, the water appears fresh and sweet; according to the condition of the land's goodness; and its corruption.
And when the salt is difficult for humans to drink; He mentioned that He created in it what their life is by; equating in that with the fresh; so He said: ﴿And from every﴾; meaning: from the salty; and the fresh; ﴿You eat﴾; from the diverse fish to types that exceed counting; and other than fish; ﴿Fresh meat﴾; meaning: delicious in taste; and what is known of its origin does not harm what is with the salt; nor does it increase in the pleasure of what is with the sweet its suitability for you. And when He mentioned (p-25) from His provisions what is the utmost in softness; He followed it with what is the utmost in hardness; so He said: ﴿And you extract﴾; meaning: you seek to extract from the salt; not from the fresh; and you find that for extraction; Al-Baghawi said: And it is said: The pearl is attributed to both of them because there may be in the salty sea fresh springs that mix with it; so the pearl would be from that; ﴿A decoration you wear﴾; meaning: your women; from jewels; pearls; and corals; and others; so what is decreed with the softness of that; and the hardness of this; with their generation from it; except for the chosen doer.
And when eating and extracting from the public benefits was addressed; and when the stability of something in the sea without sinking is a strange matter; however, due to its familiarity, it does not realize that it is one of the greatest signs of the capable and chosen One except for the people of insight; He specified the address; so He said: ﴿And you see the ships﴾; that is: the vessels; are called 'fulk' due to their rotation; and 'safina' for their peeling of the water; and He presented the context because it is more indicative of that; so He said: ﴿in it﴾; that is: each of them; submerged except for a little of it; and when the speech was completed; He mentioned its condition which is justified by seeking; so He said: ﴿mawakir﴾; that is: the vessels; turning away from the wind; cutting through the water; piercing the air with their bow; this one is coming; and that one is going; its face towards the back of this one; with one wind; Al-Bukhari said; in the chapter of trade at sea: And Mujahid said: The ships cut through the wind; and the wind does not cut through the ships except for the great fulk; and the author of the dictionary said: 'Makhara the ship - like manaa' - makhran and makhooran: it ran; or faced the wind in its running; and 'the fulk of the mawakir'; which the sound of its running is heard; or it cuts through the water with its prow; or the coming and going with one wind; and in the hadith: "If one of you intends to urinate, let him face the wind"; and in another wording: "Face the wind"; that is: turn your backs to the wind; for when it turns away, it cuts through it with its back; and it took from his right and left; and the facing of it may be a tamakhr; however, in the hadith, it is a turning away; this concludes the speech of the dictionary; then he commented on the makhr - justifying - his saying: ﴿to seek﴾; that is: to request with great intensity; and when the greatest name was mentioned in the previous verse; he returned the pronoun to it; to indicate the intensity of the connection of this verse with the one before it; so he said: ﴿from His bounty﴾; that is: Allah; by means of that reaching the vast lands; for trade; and others; and if He had made it stationary, that would not have resulted; and in the Surah of 'Al-Jathiya', there is what benefits here; ﴿and perhaps you will be grateful﴾; that is: and to be your condition with these blessings - indicating the great power of Allah; and His kindness - the state of one who is hoped to be thanked.
