Commentary
And when it was in the context of encouraging belief after informing that he is a bearer of good news and a warner, he expressed by using the present tense to clarify the state of those whose wealth and children distance them from Allah: "And those who strive" meaning they renew their striving without repentance with their wealth and children "in Our signs" regarding the greatness of being connected to Us. "Challenging" meaning seeking to challenge it, that is, to challenge those who bring it by preventing their desires through the doubts they cast, leading others astray with what We have abundantly provided them with of wealth and children.
And when glorified and exalted is He, had decisively ruled regarding their wretchedness and executed the decree of their loss, He dropped the conjunction of the cause as a rejection of their deeds and said: "Those" meaning the distant ones, the despised ones "in the punishment" meaning the one that removes sweetness. "They will be brought" meaning they will be present in it, the appointed ones over them from Our forces in the easiest and simplest manner while they are humbled. Al-Qushayri said: Indeed, these are the ones who do not respect the friends of Allah and do not observe the right of Allah in secret. They are in the punishment of opposing the friends of Allah and the punishment of falling into the evil of that in committing the prohibitions of Allah, then in the punishment of falling from the sight of Allah.
