And when this resemblance of theirs had two branches, one relating to the essence and the other to the fruits, he began with the first because it is more important. He said, confirming the denial of those who think that their striving benefits them in sustenance: "Say!" O most honorable of creation to Allah! Confirming for the sake of their denial that He expands in this world for one who does not approve of his actions: "Indeed, my Lord," meaning the One who has bestowed upon me the blessing of everlasting happiness, "expands sustenance," meaning He renews it at every time He wills with wealth, children, and others. "For whom He wills and restricts," meaning He constricts for whom He wills among you, us, and others from the nations opposing us and you in the fundamentals, with the condition that it is not possible for all those who are expanded upon to be upon what is true in His sight and pleasing to Him, due to their differences in fundamentals and the excommunication of some of them towards others. Indeed, Allah will punish some of them without a doubt, thus their resemblance is invalidated, and it is established that He does what He wills as a test and trial. So, the expansion does not indicate pleasure, nor does the constriction indicate anger, as is known from His Sunnah in this abode. "But most people," meaning those who have not risen above the level of ignorance and turmoil, "do not know," meaning they do not have knowledge to contemplate what we have mentioned regarding the matter, so they know that not every one who is expanded upon in his worldly life is happy in his hereafter.
