Commentary
And when it became clear from their questioning that it was not for guidance, even though they exaggerated in their denial and mockery after the conveying of the evidence, he was commanded to respond to them with what is suitable for the obstinate from the clear threat by saying: "Say to you" [meaning] O rigid, coarse ones who do not allow for possibilities, and do not contemplate what has been clarified by the signs, while they are weak in defense, exaggeration, and refusal. "The appointed time of a day" means that the minds cannot bear the description of its greatness for what will come in it from punishment, whether it is the day of death or resurrection. And when the attachment of souls to the deadline is great, he said: "Do not be delayed" meaning there is no delay for you and it is not possible to request for the swift pursuit and the impossibility of escape "from it for an hour" because the one who brings it is of immense power and encompasses all knowledge, and for this reason he said: "And do not advance" meaning there is no advancement for you for a moment or less than that, nor can you seek that.
