Commentary
And when knowledge was taken away from them, he followed it with his evidence. He said, expressing in the present tense that indicates the continuity of repetition to inform that it is in the manner of mockery, not guidance: ﴿And they say﴾ that is, we did not send you except [in] this state [and the state is] that the warners say, out of their ignorance of the consequence of what they are promised, without thinking about it in terms of escaping from it and avoiding it, in every moment of mockery from them: ﴿When is this promise﴾ that is, with the good tidings and the warning on the Day of Gathering and otherwise, so they called it a promise, adding to their mockery. And when the saying of the group is more deserving of acceptance and further from rejection than the saying of one, he indicated to their increased ignorance by saying: ﴿If you are﴾ that is, O Prophet and his followers! Being that you are deeply rooted in it ﴿truthful﴾ [that is,] firmly established in truth.
