Commentary

And when they were either to respond to the truce and thereby achieve the goal soon, or to say: we will not leave you, and this possibility was more likely, he commanded him to respond to them according to his estimation by saying: "Say, our Lord will gather between us." This means in His decree arranged according to His measure in this world or in the Hereafter. Al-Qushayri said: The elders await in the gathering additional benefits and find comfort in this verse. And the gathering has a great matter in the Shari'ah.

And when their fairness was extremely distant from them, and that was in itself of great significance, he indicated it with a tool of distance and said: "Then He will judge between us" with a judgment by which the path becomes easy "with truth" meaning the established matter that no one among us or among you can deviate from it, and it is justice or virtue without oppression or bias. And when the estimation is: He is the All-Gathering, the Powerful, he added to it his saying: "And He is the Opener" meaning the eloquent opener of what has been closed, so no one can open it "the All-Knowing" meaning the one who comprehensively acts with every detail and significant matter in which judgments can be made, for He is capable of resolving all disputes.
