Commentary
And when the news about the gardens, which have the sustenance of both blessings and punishments, was completed, he followed it with the places of residence and said: ﴿And We made﴾ meaning by what We have of greatness. And He indicated by the removal of the neighbor about the inhabitation of all those lands with buildings and benefits, saying: ﴿Between them﴾ meaning between the villages of the people of Saba' ﴿and between the cities﴾ meaning cities that were or less than them ﴿which We blessed﴾ meaning a blessing that We took care of with the care of one who debates another with the utmost greatness ﴿in it﴾ meaning by making it places of knowledge and sustenance by the prophets and the chosen ones of the saints, and it is the land of Ash-Sham ﴿clear villages﴾ meaning from the land of Ash-Sham in the highlands of the land and what is firm and elevated from it, because the buildings in it are more stable, and walking in it is easier, and the joy of seeing all the gardens and what is in them of greenery is more possible. So it is clear to the eyes among those gardens, as if they are beautiful stars, with their proximity such that some can be seen from others, and the abundance of wealth in it and the pride and benefits and assistance for the passersby; Al-Baghawi said: There were four thousand and seven hundred connected villages from Saba' to Ash-Sham.
And when, with this description, there might be difficulty for the traveler due to the lack of agreement in resting and lodging, He removed this with His saying: ﴿And We determined therein the journey﴾ meaning We made it according to measures that are in the utmost ease for the traveler in his stopping whenever he wants, whether at night or during the day, according to what is customary for travelers. Therefore, it is truly appropriate to say to its people and those who settle in it as a form of gratitude: ﴿Travel﴾ and the evidence for their proximity is indeed His saying: ﴿in it﴾ and it indicates its abundance and long distance and its suitability for travel at any time desired, preferring what is more indicative of safety and more just for traveling in hot lands by His saying: ﴿Nights﴾ and He indicated to the abundance of shade and humidity and the moderation that allows for travel throughout the day by His saying: ﴿and days﴾ meaning at any time you wish, and it indicates the great safety in every time regarding every calamity by His saying: ﴿Safe﴾ meaning from fear and fatigue, or loss or thirst or hunger.
