Commentary
And when the Most High informed that He had subjected the jinn to him, He mentioned their state in their works. This indicates that He, glorified and exalted is He, acts in the heavens and the earth and in what is in them as He wills. So He said, "They work for him," meaning at any time He wishes, "whatever He wills," meaning of His work, "of sanctuaries," meaning noble buildings of palaces and other places that are worthy of being worshipped upon, or mosques. The mihrab is the front part of every mosque, assembly, and house. Among what they built for him was the House of Al-Maqdis, its walls made of remarkable and exquisite stones, and white, yellow, and green marble. Its columns are made of white marble, adorned with ceilings and walls of gold, silver, pearls, rubies, musk, amber, and other fragrances. He spread its ground with slabs of turquoise until it was the most splendid house on the face of the earth. "And statues," meaning beautiful images on those buildings, in which there are strange secrets. As they mentioned, they made for him two lions at the bottom of his throne and two eagles at its top. When he wanted to ascend, the two lions would spread their arms, and when he sat, the two eagles would shade him. The images were not prohibited.
And when he mentioned the palaces and their adornments, he mentioned the utensils of food because they are the first thing sought after settling in a dwelling. So he said, "And large bowls," meaning dishes and platters in which food is served, "like reservoirs," the plural of jabiya, which is the large basin to which water is gathered, meaning it is collected. It was said that a thousand men would sit on a single dish.
And when he mentioned the platters in a way that is admired and esteemed, he mentioned what is cooked in them. So he said, "And fixed cauldrons," meaning stable, fixed in a great manner so that they do not move from their bases because of their size, like mountains. And when he mentioned the dwellings and what follows them, he followed it with a command to work, indicating that he, blessings and peace be upon him, and those who follow him are not distracted by that from worship. So he said, "Work," meaning we said to them: Enjoy and work, indicating their increased closeness by omitting the call particle and their honor by expressing it with the family. So he said, "The family of David," meaning everything that brings one closer to Allah, "in gratitude," meaning for the sake of gratitude to Him, glorified and exalted is He. This is to glorify Him in response to His blessings so that He may increase you from His bounty, or it may be understood as: be grateful, because "Work" in it has the meaning of "Be grateful," since work for the benefactor is gratitude to Him. It is also possible that "Work" takes an object meaning that we have subjected the jinn to you, they work for you whatever you wish, so you work in gratitude - in a manner of similarity - and "And few" means we said that while the condition is that it is few.
And when the situation did not necessitate greatness because it is an exaggeration in gratitude that is more appropriate, He omitted its appearance and said, "Of My servants are the grateful," meaning those who are abundant in their motives, outwardly and inwardly, from their hearts, tongues, and bodies in gratitude by directing all that Allah has bestowed upon them in what pleases Him. He expressed it in the form of fa'ool to indicate that those who are in a state of complete gratitude are many, and the least of that is in a state of necessity.
