Commentary
Then he mentioned the reason for the command in the form of a directive, indicating that his work was for Allah. He said: ﴿Make full coats of armor﴾, meaning long and wide armor.
And when the stringing of beads in the leather and the insertion of the thread in the place of the beads was compared to the insertion of one ring into another with a joint that has no end in the places of the beads, it was said: ﴿And measure in stringing﴾ meaning in weaving that each ring should be equal to its sister while being tight so that no arrow can pass through it. And let it be beneath it in such a way that no sword can uproot it, nor should it weigh down the wearer, preventing him from the lightness of movement and the speed of transition in charging and fleeing, and in stabbing and striking in cold and heat. It is apparent that there were no nails in its rings due to the lack of need for the softening of iron to it; otherwise, there would be no difference between it and others, nor would there be any benefit in softening. Some of those who saw what was attributed to it without nails reported it. Al-Zajjaj said: stringing in the language means estimating one thing to another so that some of it can follow in succession. And from this is their saying: So-and-so strung the story. This is as Allah, glorified and exalted is He, softened for the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, in the trench that rock, and in another narration: that boulder, after the tools could not work on it, and they reached the limit of their effort. So he struck it, blessings and peace be upon him, with one strike, and in another narration, he sprinkled water on it, and it became a mound that would not repel an axe. And that rock which Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, informed him about that broke their axes and tools, and they were unable to handle it. So the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, struck it three times, breaking three of them with his strikes, and with each strike, there was a flash of light, and he glorified Allah with a takbir along with it. And it illuminated for the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, what was between the two lava fields of Medina, such that during the day it was as if it were a lamp in the depths of a dark house. So they asked him about that, and he informed them, blessings and peace be upon him, that one of the strikes illuminated for him Sana'a from the land of Yemen until he saw its gates from that place. And Gabriel, peace be upon him, informed him that it would be opened to his nation. And the other strike illuminated for him the white palaces of al-Hira as if they were the fangs of dogs, and he informed that they were opened for them. And the other strike illuminated for him the red palaces of Sham as if they were the fangs of dogs, and he informed of their opening to them. So Allah, glorified and exalted is He, fulfilled for him all that he said, and greater than that was the softening of the wood for him until it became a sword strong in its blade and good in its iron. And that was when the sword of Abdullah ibn Jahsh, may Allah be pleased with him, broke on the day of Uhud, so the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, gave him a cluster of dates, and it returned in his hand as a standing sword from it, and he fought with it, and it was called al-Awn. And it continued to be inherited until it was sold by Baghā al-Turki for two hundred dinars, as mentioned by al-Kulā'ī in the biography from al-Zubayr ibn Abi Bakr and al-Bayhaqi. And [Akkāsha] ibn Mihsan fought on the day of Badr, and his sword broke, so he came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and he gave him a piece of wood. When he took it, he shook it, and it returned in his hand as a long sword, strong in its blade, white in iron, and he fought with it until Allah granted victory to the Muslims. And that sword was called al-Awn. Then it remained with him, witnessing with it the battles with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and after him until he was killed in the apostasy while it was with him. And from al-Waqidi, it is said that the sword of Salama ibn Aslam ibn al-Huraysh broke on the day of Badr, so the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, gave him a stick that was in his hand from the clusters of Ibn Ṭāb, and he said: Strike with it. And behold, it was a good sword, and it remained with him until he was killed on the day of the bridge of Abu Ubaidah. And the softening of the iron is not more astonishing than the softening of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, for the hand of Mu'awidh ibn Afra when Abu Jahl cut it off on the day of Badr, and he came with it carrying it in his other hand. So the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, spat on it and attached it, and it adhered and became sound like its sister, as narrated by al-Bayhaqi and others.
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, completed what pertains to Him from the honors, He turned to what He gathered in it the pronoun, for it encompasses others. He said: ﴾And work﴿ meaning you and whoever obeys you ﴾righteous deeds﴿ meaning by what We have favored you with from knowledge and success for obedience. Then He explained this command, encouraging and warning, by saying, emphasizing that their denial of the ability to resurrect is a denial of other attributes. And that the one who is negligent in action is among those who deny that he is in the sight of Allah: ﴾Indeed, I am All-Seer of what you do﴿ meaning all of it ﴾All-Seer﴿ meaning All-Seeing and Knowing of every apparent and hidden matter.
