Commentary

And when the reason for all this threat was what they were deliberately causing of harm to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, by their saying: "He married the wife of his son," and other than that until he concluded with what would be a reason for their wishing for his obedience. And hearing this was a kindness for whoever believed in it. He followed it with what is like the result of it and said: "O you who have believed," meaning those who have believed in what has been recited to them, "do not be" by your harming the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding Zainab, may Allah be pleased with her, or others. Being is like a stamp for you, "like those who harmed Moses" from his people, the Children of Israel. They harmed him with various types of harm, as our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said when he divided a division and some of them spoke in it and said: "Indeed, Moses was harmed more than this, yet he was patient." And the most relevant thing to the intention here is the harm of Qarun to him with the adulteress whom he hired to slander him with herself. So Allah cleared him of that, and it was the reason for the sinking of Qarun and those with him. "So Allah cleared him," meaning the One who has the attributes of majesty, beauty, power over everything, and perfection. And the expression in the form of causation indicates that the clearing was gradual through the sinking and the sudden death and the striking of the staff of Harun, as has been mentioned in the end of the stories. And when he prohibited resembling the harm-doers, he included more than that their harm could be verbal or physical. He indicated that the intended harm here is verbal, like that regarding Zainab, may Allah be pleased with her, and he said: "from what they said," without saying: "from what they harmed," and that is by what he manifested of the proof of his truthfulness. So he caused the sinking of those who harmed him, as has been mentioned in the stories, so beware then beware. And when their intention with this harm was to undermine his status, he said: "And he was," meaning Moses, peace be upon him, a firmly established status "with Allah," meaning the One who does not humiliate whoever is loyal to Him. "And a person of status," meaning honored and of high rank. When he asked Him, He gave him. And if he was with Allah at this rank, he was with the people by it, due to what they see of Allah's honoring him. And the statement is like the justification for the clearing, for no one clears a person except one who is of status with him.
