Commentary
And when the greatest of his harm ﷺ was the harm of those who followed him, and since the followers, by virtue of not being infallible, could be imagined to harm the truth, he clarified his words by saying: "And those who harm the believers" meaning the firmly rooted in [the attribute of] faith, "and the believing women" likewise. And when the harm caused by lies is more severe [in] corruption and greater in harm, he said: "without what they have earned" meaning without any wrongdoing they committed intentionally that would permit their harm. "Indeed, they have borne" meaning: they have imposed upon themselves that they have carried "a slander" meaning: a lie and a sin exceeding the limit, necessitating disgrace in this world. And when there are people who are not affected by disgrace, and since the harm may occur without words, he said: "and a manifest sin" meaning: a very clear sin that necessitates punishment in the Hereafter.
