32O wives of the prophet, you are not like any other women, if you observe taqwā (righteousness). So, do not be too soft in your speech, lest someone having disease in his heart should develop fancies (about you); and do speak with appropriate words.

Commentary

And when there is for every truth a reality, and for every truthful saying an explanation, he said, announcing His favor: "O wives of the Prophet". This means that you are among the most knowledgeable of people regarding what is between him and Allah concerning the news of the details of matters and the hidden secrets, and what he has of nearness with Him. "You are not like any one of the women". Al-Baghawi said: And he did not say: like one of the women, because 'one' is general and applies to the singular, dual, plural, masculine, and feminine - this is the end. The meaning is that among groups of women, if the community of women is considered group by group, there is no group among them that equals you in virtue for what Allah has favored you with of nearness by the nearness of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and the revelation that is between him and Allah in your homes.

And when the meaning was: rather, you are the highest of women, he mentioned the condition for that and said: "If you fear Allah". This means that you make a barrier between yourselves and the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. Then he caused this negation by his saying: "So do not be soft in speech". This means that if you speak in the presence of a foreign man, "with soft words". This means that it should be gentle, sweet, and soft. And softness is the act of lowering oneself, humility, gentleness, and inviting to equality. Then he caused from the softness: his saying: "So that he in whose heart is a disease may covet". This means that he may desire treachery. "The one in whose heart is a disease" means corruption and suspicion. The expression of coveting indicates that his wish has no basis in reality, because the gentleness in the speech of women is a trait for them that is not forced. Therefore, it was intended from the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to be forced to bring forth the opposite of it.

And when he prohibited them from yielding to the nature of women in the softness of voice, he commanded them to do the opposite and said: "And say a good word". This means that it should be known that it is far from the place of coveting.
