Commentary
And when he presented the prevention of evils, which is from the category of detachment, he followed it with the attraction of benefits, which is from the category of attachment. He said: ﴿And whoever is devout﴾, meaning he sincerely dedicates his obedience. The explanation of the reading of Ya'qub with the upper form has already been mentioned as narrated by al-Baghawi and al-Ahwazi in the irregular readings from Ibn Muslim. ﴿From you﴾, which is deserving of not turning to others because there is no one greater than Him by maintaining obedience, so he does not depart from His watchfulness at all. ﴿And His Messenger﴾, so do not anger Him and do not ask Him for anything, and do not choose a life other than His life. For it is obligatory upon everyone to purify his thoughts, to calm his heart and secret, so that he may be able, to the utmost extent, to fulfill our commands and to carry out what We have sent him for, due to the mercy of the servants, by saving them from what they are in of hardships.
And when that may imply the restriction to the [action of] the heart, he said: ﴿And act﴾. Hamzah and al-Kisai read it with the lower form in response to the word 'whoever', urging them towards the ranks of men. The reading of the majority is with the upper form, referring to being gentle with them in the actions of the limbs and being content with what is possible, as he, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "If she commands you with something, then do from it what you can." As for the action of the heart, there is no satisfaction in it without the ultimate goal. Therefore, 'is devout' is masculine not due to irregularity. ﴿Righteous﴾, meaning in all that He, glorified and exalted is He, has commanded or prohibited. ﴿We will grant her﴾, meaning with what We have of greatness according to the reading of the majority with the 'nun', and the reading of Hamzah and al-Kisai with the lower form indicates that the pronoun refers to Allah. ﴿Her reward twice﴾, meaning in comparison to the reward of others from the women of the rest of the people. ﴿And We have prepared﴾, meaning We have made ready with what We have of greatness and We have brought forth ﴿for her﴾ due to her contentment with the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who desires to detach from the worldly life that Allah dislikes, along with what is in that of providing for the share in the Hereafter. ﴿A generous provision﴾, meaning in this world and the Hereafter, for there is nothing more generous than it, because what is in this world of it is facilitated to be spent in a way that brings the greatest reward, and there is no fear of any kind of reproach, let alone punishment. And what is in the Hereafter of it cannot be described or limited, and there is no hardship in it at all nor toil.
