Commentary
And when He reminded them, glorified is He, of His favor by sending against their enemies from His troops, and He clarified the conditions of the hypocrites and the truthful, and what He has in that of secrets, and He concluded with these two attributes, saying, reminding of their effect in what He broke of the norm by turning the enemies away despite their multitude and strength, in a state that no sane person would accept for himself. He referred to His saying at the beginning of the surah and the story: "So We sent" [Al-Ahzab: 9] "And Allah returned" meaning by what He has of the attributes of perfection "those who disbelieved" meaning those who concealed what the suns of their minds indicated of the evidence of oneness and the truth of the message. They are from those who allied among the Arabs and others against the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, to their lands from Medina and to harass the believers, while they were in a state of "with their rage" which necessitated for them the alliance [then what necessitated for them the division without any benefit] while they were in a state of "they did not attain any good" neither from religion nor from this world, rather He forsook them in every regard.
And when the response might be due to their enmity, He clarified that the matter is not like that, saying: "And Allah is sufficient" meaning the Almighty with His power and might for His servants, and it indicated that He did that only for the sake of the people of sincerity, saying: "the believers in fighting" by what He cast into their hearts of the call to retreat by the wind and the troops from the angels and others among them, Nu'aym ibn Mas'ud, as previously mentioned.
And when this was a remarkable matter, He followed it with what indicates that it is easy for Him, saying: "And Allah was" meaning the One who has every attribute of perfection, always, eternally, and forever "Strong" nothing can overwhelm Him "Mighty" He prevails over everything.
