Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: It has been understood from the context of this story that the intention is to turn towards Him, glorified and exalted is He, and to cut off all ties with others. This is because He is capable of everything. He is enough for whoever turns to Him for every important matter, even if they are in the utmost inability regarding it. Sometimes this is due to an apparent reason and sometimes due to something else. So why did He not decree, by consensus, the word of peace, so that comfort may be attained from all this hardship? It was answered that this is so that the attributes of might, greatness, and justice, among others, may manifest completely, and so that the judgment that unveils the veil may be revealed. The curtains of causes are lifted for its utmost manifestation. So He, the Most High, said, commenting on His saying: "Indeed, armies have come to you" [Al-Ahzab: 9] "so that Allah may reward" meaning the One who intends to manifest all His attributes on the Day of Resurrection for the specific and the general completely. "The truthful" in their claim that they have believed in Him "with their truthfulness". Thus, He elevates their matter in this world and grants them bliss in the Hereafter. Truthfulness is a cause, even if it is a favor from Him, for He is the One who grants success to it. "And He will punish the hypocrites" in both abodes for their lies in their claims of faith which necessitate the selling of the soul and wealth. "If He wills" He punishes them for their hypocrisy, "or He may turn to them" meaning by what they see of His truthfulness, glorified and exalted is He, in honoring His allies and humiliating His enemies with His complete power, while they were firmly denying the opposite of that.
And when the repentance of the hypocrites was deemed unlikely due to what they see of their hardness in deception and the wickedness of their inner selves, He said, justifying all of that in a manner of emphasis: "Indeed, Allah" meaning by what He possesses of majesty and beauty, "was" eternally and will always be, "Forgiving and Merciful". He conceals sin and bestows honor upon its owner. As for the reward for everyone, mercy is general. And as for punishing the hypocrite, it is specific to the truthful, for the punishment of their enemies is among their greatest blessings. And in His judgment of justice, the generality of mercy is also present, for He does not punish anyone beyond what they deserve.
