Commentary
And when the hardship is in reality only for the steadfast, for what they have is nothing but destruction or victory. As for the hypocrite, he offers peace and enters his home in humiliation by agreeing to all that is desired of him. The state of the believers is expressed by limiting the address to the head so that it does not enter into the content of the news, indicating that his noble position is too exalted to be tested. So He, the Exalted, said: "There, at that great time, far in rank, the believers were tested." This means that those firmly rooted in faith were mixed with what has the potential to alter and sway them. It was built for the unknown since the aim is to know the sincere from others, with the knowledge that the one who does that is the one who has all authority. The test was not emphasized by the severity due to the indication of its occurrence. The speech was directed away from the address along with the benefits that preceded it. He expressed it with the description to specify the steadfast ones, saying: "And they were shaken," meaning they were moved, pushed, disturbed, and troubled by what they see of the horrors due to the multitude of enemies and the spread of rumors. "A severe shaking," so they remained steadfast with the support of Allah for them upon their covenant.
