Commentary
And when their condition became clear with this question, the essence of which is the hastiness towards mockery, as they do not increase with the clarification except in stubbornness, He commanded them with a response that contains the most severe threat. He said, acting in the manner of the Able One by turning away from their request to specify the day, to mention His condition: ﴿Say﴾, that is, to these ignorant and stubborn ones: ﴿The Day of Victory﴾, meaning that which they mock, and it is the Day of Resurrection - you will hasten to believe after being detached from what you are in of arrogance and pride, so it will not benefit you after seeing. (p-271) [And this means] ﴿No﴾ will it benefit you, thus was the original, but He expressed the description generally and made the ruling contingent upon it, saying: ﴿It will benefit those who disbelieved﴾, meaning those who covered the signs of their Lord, which are unmistakable, whether in that you or others who have this description. ﴿Their faith﴾, because it is not faith in the unseen, but it is presented as what is known. ﴿And they will not be given respite﴾, meaning they will not be delayed in the infliction of punishment upon them for even a moment, nor will they be granted any respite.
