Commentary
﴿Or did﴾ they say in denying the resurrection: If we have become dust in the earth, and did not ﴿see that we﴾ with what we have of greatness ﴿bring forth water﴾ from the sky or the earth ﴿to the barren land﴾ that is the one whose vegetation has been cut off, meaning it has become smooth with dryness and desiccation, meaning by the hands of people, so it has become smooth with no plant in it. And in Al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them: Indeed, it is the one that does not rain except for rain that does not benefit it at all. They said: Nor is it said for that which does not grow like marshes: barren lands. And this is indicated by his saying: ﴿So we bring forth by it﴾ from the depths of the earth ﴿crops﴾ meaning plants that have no stalk due to the mixing of water with the soil that was previously cultivated. And he indicated that it is a reality, there is no doubt in it, and it is not an illusion as the magicians do. By his saying, reminding of the blessing of preservation after creation: ﴿They eat from it﴾ meaning from its grain and its leaves and its straw and its fodder ﴿their livestock﴾ and he has advanced it for the position of gratitude for it because it is their sustenance in their livelihoods and their bodies. And because the context is for the absolute bringing forth of crops, and the first benefit of it is for the eating of livestock, unlike what is in Surah Abasa, for the context there is for the food of humans which is the end of the crops where he said: ﴿So let man look to his food﴾ [Abasa: 24] Then he said ﴿And We caused to grow in it grain﴾ [Abasa: 27] and he mentioned from his food grapes and others that are [not] suitable for livestock ﴿and themselves﴾ meaning from its grain, and its origin if it is herbs.
And when this verse was [illuminating, and it was] clear in its indication of resurrection, the ignorant does not need anything other than seeing it to acknowledge it. He said: ﴿Do they not see﴾ indicating that whoever sees it and is aware of what is in it of indication and insists on denial has no sight nor insight.
