And when he mentioned the recompense of the arrogant, the soul longed for the recompense of the humble. He indicated their recompense with the letter of causation, pointing out that He is the One who enabled them to perform these deeds by His mercy, and made them a means to enter His Paradise. And if He had willed, it would have been otherwise. [He said:] "So no soul knows" meaning from all souls, neither near nor far, "what has been hidden for them" meaning for these who reflect, from the All-Knowing of the keys of the unseen and its treasures, just as they used to conceal their deeds in prayer during the depths of the night and otherwise, and they do not show off with them. And perhaps it was built for the passive form in the reading of the congregation, to glorify it by diverting thought from the hidden, every inclination, or for the knowledge that it is Allah, the Exalted, who they concealed their supererogatory deeds for His sake. And Hamzah softened the 'ya' indicating that it is for the speaker, glorified is He, a shift from the style of greatness to the style of gentleness, and the secret is its appropriateness to the state of deeds.

And when the eye does not settle to sleep except in safety and joy, He said: "from the coolness of the eyes" meaning from something precious and delightful that makes their eyes settle because they have removed them from their resting place in sleep. Then He clarified what the letter of causation implied, saying: "as a reward" meaning He has concealed it for them as a reward for what they used to do. [Meaning] for what is for them like their nature, "they used to do." Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: "Allah, the Exalted, said: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has not occurred to the heart of a human." Abu Hurairah said: Read if you wish: "So no soul knows" the verse.
