Commentary

(p-222) Surah Alif Lam Meem

Its purpose is to warn the disbelievers with this glad tidings for the righteous of entering Paradise and being saved from the Fire. Its name, Al-Sajda, is applicable to this because of what it calls for [in its verses] from humility and leaving arrogance. Likewise, its naming with Alif Lam Meem indicates a reflection on the entirety of the Surah. It is very clear in this purpose: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,' the Majestic and Honorable, the Mighty and Forgiving, 'the Most Gracious' in the general indication of warning and tidings, 'the Most Merciful' who has instilled in the hearts of His beloved ones a longing for Him and humility before Him.

﴿Alif Lam Meem﴾ has been previously discussed in Al-Baqarah and elsewhere, with some of the secrets of these letters. Among what has not been previously mentioned is that it is an indication that Allah, who encompasses all in His knowledge, power, and every matter, sent Gabriel, peace be upon him, to Muhammad, the opening and the seal of the Prophets, blessings and peace be upon him, with an inimitable Book that indicates by its inimitability the validity of his message, the oneness of the One who sent him, His justice towards the sinners, and His grace towards the obedient. Glorified and exalted is He, He has mentioned these letters at the beginning of four of these Surahs, increasing by one over the T’s, and that is in accordance with the number that is confirmed by it. The increase in the principle of the number indicates that the repetition is not meant for absolute emphasis, but rather the continuity of the repetition, indicating that these meanings are firmly established with no interruption. And Allah is the Guide.
