And when man may be heedless, if he is alerted, he becomes aware. This indicates, glorified and exalted is He, that this man engrossed in the causes of loss does not increase over the passage of time except in surprise at everything that comes to him from the statement of oppression and tyranny. He said, specifying the pronoun, also to the wording, so that no one who is overly clever may claim that the blameworthy is only the plural, diverting the speech to the manifestation of greatness due to what the situation necessitated from intimidation: (p-150) ﴿And when Our verses are recited to him﴾ meaning that the recitation of that is renewed for him along with the greatness it has from any reciter, no matter how great. ﴿He turns away﴾ meaning after hearing, turning away completely whether it is in a state of avoidance or [turning away] ﴿Arrogantly﴾ meaning in a state of seeking to establish it by turning away from obedience, confirming our statement at the end of that ﴿And if you bring them a sign, those who disbelieve will surely say, 'You are but falsifiers.'﴾ [Ar-Rum: 58]

And when the listener to His verses, glorified and exalted is He, is worthy of being endowed with tenderness and humility, He, the Exalted, indicated that this wretched one was in a state of hearing and distancing as he was before: ﴿As if﴾ meaning as if he, meaning his state after hearing is similar to his state when ﴿He did not hear them﴾. This indicated that he remained in a state of arrogance because he compared his state with hearing to his state with not hearing. It has been clarified that his state with hearing is arrogance, so his state before hearing was likewise.

And when one who has not heard something may be receptive to hearing, if he speaks to one from whom it has been customary to hear, he hears. It has been clarified that this state is equal to what was before the recitation, so it is equal to what is after it, because his hearing is similar to one who is deaf. The present tense in "is recited" implies that the state in anticipation is like the state in actuality. So He, the Exalted, said: ﴿As if there is heaviness in his ears﴾ meaning deafness that is equal to his being spoken to by others and his silence.

(p-151) And when this resulted in his deserving what removes his pride and arrogance and greatness, and the continuation of pain is the greatest breaker for those of high ambition, and it is from human nature to tremble at the promise of goodness, whatever type of trembling it may be. He said: ﴿So give him glad tidings﴾. And when he is worthy of receiving - he does not turn away due to his human assumption - towards its reality, because whoever knows that he is deserving of punishment due to his grave actions does not cease to receive blessings time after time until he thinks or nearly concludes that sins are the cause of that and that he - when he is with Allah of great status - is not compelled to perform any of the actions, he reprimanded him with His saying: ﴿With a punishment﴾ meaning a continuous punishment ﴿Painful﴾.
