And when they were hastening towards disbelief after their separation from this great verse, and their being clothed with this immense blessing, which made them aware of what the previous verse contained regarding His singular truth, His exaltation, His greatness, and the nullification of their partners, He turned away from them the face of address because they did not return after the clarity, signaling a severe deserving of wrath and punishment. So He said, marveling and emphasizing what you can estimate: 'And as for the one who is not patient and grateful, they do not see what is in that from the signs in their state of ease: ﴿And when they are covered﴾ meaning it overwhelms them while they are in it until it becomes as if it is covering them; because it prevented them from extending their sight as it was ﴿a wave﴾ meaning this type, and perhaps He singled it out because of the severity of its disturbance and its coming in something that follows something else continuously, riding one upon another as if it is one thing. Its origin is from movement and crowding ﴿like clouds﴾ meaning until it was like the edges of the dark mountains for one who is beside them. [And to indicate their utmost submission, He repeated the greatest name and said]: ﴿They called upon Allah﴾ meaning they were invoking Him while being aware of what a person can attain of His perfection through His majesty and beauty, knowing all that is contained in the previous verse regarding His truth, His exaltation, His greatness, and the nullification of what they invoke besides Him ﴿sincerely for Him is the religion﴾ they do not invoke anything else with their tongues or hearts due to what compelled them to that from the signs of majesty, and His overpowering them with greatness and perfection. The situation in the Surah of Wisdom necessitated the omission of what they invoked for the glorification of the matter in it due to what it necessitated from hardships, so that the soul may go in every direction.
And when killing by sword was easier for them than to be said about them: that they have acknowledged something they deny due to fear of the disgrace of that and the shame, until one said: If it were not said that I only embraced Islam out of fear of death, which would cause my children to be insulted after me, I would have embraced Islam. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, made clear to them that they fell into what they did out of fear of drowning in that. More astonishing than that is their return to disbelief after being saved, due to the ingratitude for the grace which is among them one of the greatest abominations. So He said, indicating by the conjunction that they were close to their transformation and folly and ignorance: 'So when He saved them,' meaning He rescued them, raising them, a great salvation for them gradually from those horrors 'to the land.' They descended from that rank in which they sincerely devoted themselves to the religion, and they turned away from the path of the corruptors and divided into two groups. 'So among them,' meaning it resulted from the blessing of salvation and He linked it to indicate that the cause of this division is the compulsion to sincerity in the sea and the salvation from them, that among them was 'a moderate one,' one who is forced to be moderate and inclined to remain on the straight path, which is the sincerity in monotheism that the compulsion led him to, and they are few - as indicated by the explicit mention of the division. Among them is one who denies the blessing, casting aside the garment of life in the explicit mention of that, and he is the majority, as the indication has gone towards him and it is indicated by the omission of the explicit mention of the division. And none is moderate except every patient and grateful one, either in state or in wealth. 'And none denies,' and He frightened the denier with the manifestation of the greatness that is of its nature vengeance. So He said, directing the words to him: 'With Our signs,' meaning he denies them despite their greatness, especially after acknowledging them. 'Except every treacherous one,' meaning one who is severe in betrayal, great in it for what he has broken of the covenant that reason calls to and fear invites to. 'Ungrateful,' meaning great in disbelief for the grace of one who is fluctuating in his blessings, in his secret and in his public, in his movements and in his stillness, and there is no blessing except that it is from Him. And from here comes the exaggeration in the two attributes, and it is known that they are opposites and contrasts to the conclusion of the one before it, and that the verse is from the intertwining: the mention of the moderate one first indicates 'and among them is a denier' second, and the restriction of denial to the ungrateful second to the restriction of moderation to the grateful first. Al-Baghawi said: It is said that it was revealed concerning Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl when he fled, may Allah be pleased with him, during the year of the conquest to the sea, so a fierce wind came to them - meaning: the riders said as usual: Sincerely devote yourselves, for your gods will not avail you here at all - so Ikrimah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: If Allah saves me from this, I will surely return to Muhammad and I will place my hand in his hand. Then the wind calmed, so Ikrimah, may Allah be pleased with him, returned to Mecca and embraced Islam, and his Islam was good. And Mujahid said: 'Moderate' in the saying [implies disbelief, and Al-Kalbi said: 'Moderate' in the saying] meaning among the disbelievers, for some of them were more severe in speech and higher in slander than others.
