Commentary
And when the estimation was: So whoever argues about Allah, there is no hold for him, he turned to his saying in explaining the state of their opposers: ﴿And whoever submits﴾ meaning in the present or in the future ﴿his face﴾ meaning his intention, direction, and essence entirely. And when the aim of the surah is to establish wisdom, he made the action transit with 'to' as a reminder of perfecting the way through the means of the Prophet or the Sheikh, and it is good to seek guidance in that. So he said, commenting with what is estimated: Covering and reaching ﴿to Allah﴾ who has the attributes of perfection. (p-189) So there remains for himself no matter at all, for he does not move except by a command from His commands, glorified and exalted is He. ﴿And He is﴾ meaning while it is that he ﴿good-doer﴾ meaning sincere in his inner self as he was sincere in his outer self, so he is always in a state of witnessing. ﴿Indeed, he has held fast﴾ meaning he has found holding fast to the utmost of what he is capable of in the beginning of matters to elevate his soul from its lowliness to the peak of the spirit by the hands of the guides whom He has chosen for His religion, those who are aware of the dangers of the journey and the obstacles of the way ﴿by the firmest handhold﴾ which is the most trustworthy thing to hold onto, so there is no falling for it at all. So let his gratitude please you, for indeed his Lord will elevate him to every desire as long as he is holding onto it, representing the state of this traveler with the state of one who has fallen into a well or wanted to climb a mountain. His companion claimed for him a rope with grips, so he took the most secure of it, and he will rise with it if his friend pulls him. And he is capable [of being pulled] without a doubt without separation, for his holding fast is in the utmost of precision.
And when all are heading towards Him, flowing towards Him: whoever has held fast to the firmest, and whoever has held fast to the weakest, and whoever has not held onto anything, except that the former is heading with safety, and the latter with destruction. He said, manifesting the greatness of the matter and so that it does not constrain with a conditionality, adding to what is estimated: So he will arrive at Allah safe, so to Allah is his outcome without a doubt: ﴿And to Allah﴾ meaning the Greatest King alone is the outcome of ﴿the matters﴾ meaning just as it was from Him its beginning, and He specified the outcome because they acknowledge the beginning.
