Commentary
And when man does not know the wisdom of the Wise except by His sayings and actions, and does not know the truth of the words [and His wisdom] except by its conformity to reality, the decree was: mention what we have described for Luqman so that what you hear of his states and actions in fulfilling the rights of Allah and the rights of creation, which is the essence of wisdom, may descend upon him. He added to it his saying: ﴿And when﴾ (p-161) that is, remember in your heart to take admonition and with your tongue to admonish others - since you are a messenger - what was when ﴿Luqman said to his son﴾ which indicates his gratitude within himself and his command to it for others, for there is no gratitude that equals the purity from polytheism. In it, there is encouragement to embody what Luqman was praised for, which leads to patience, gratitude, and perseverance in every good, and to the upbringing of the child, by presenting the words in a manner that indicates the repetition of his admonition. He said: ﴿And he admonished him﴾ that is, he advised him with what benefits him, softens his heart, refines his soul, and necessitates for him fear and justice.
And when the essence of fulfilling the right of the Truth is the rectification of belief and the reform of action, and the former is more important, he prioritized it and said: ﴿O my son﴾, he addressed him with the most beloved way to address him, while showing mercy, compassion, and tenderness, so that this would be more conducive to accepting the advice. ﴿Do not associate﴾ that is, [do not] commit polytheism, neither openly nor secretly. And when in his diminutive form there is compassion for him, he increased that by highlighting the greatest name which necessitates the presence of all majesty, to achieve more compassion. He said: ﴿With Allah﴾ that is, the Greatest King who has no equal. Then he justified this prohibition by saying: ﴿Indeed, polytheism﴾ that is, in both of its types ﴿is a great injustice﴾ that is, it is against wisdom, for it is placing something in other than its proper place. Thus, its injustice is evident from many aspects, the most apparent of which is that it equates the owned, who has nothing of himself but non-existence, as a blessing from the Owner who has the necessity of existence. There is no good or blessing except from Him. In this, there is a reminder to Quraysh and every listener that this is a command that should not be deviated from, for it comes from a wise father to a beloved son. And if their fathers had been wise, they would not have done anything but that, for it leads to what is essential for the apparent and hidden blessings, both religious and worldly, immediate and delayed, which are safety and guidance. ﴿Those who have believed and have not mixed their belief with injustice, those are the ones for whom there is security, and they are guided﴾ [Al-An'am: 82]. For when that verse was revealed, as in Sahih al-Bukhari in various places from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, it was difficult for the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and they said: which of us has not mixed his belief with injustice? The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'It is not as you think, did you not hear the words of Luqman: ﴿Indeed, polytheism is a great injustice﴾'.
