Commentary
And when He concluded with the attributes of might - which is the ultimate of power - and wisdom - which is the fruit of knowledge - He indicated them by the perfection of His actions and their precision, and He said: ﴿He created the heavens﴾ meaning in their height, greatness, and vastness ﴿without pillars﴾. And His saying: ﴿You see them﴾ indicates wisdom, if we say it is an attribute for pillars or a new statement. As for if we say the latter, it is because such a great and vast creation carries purely by power. And if we say the former, then the structure of such a thing on pillars, which are usually carriers of it, is, despite that, in a way that is not seen, more included in wisdom and more delicate in subtlety and greatness. This is because it requires two actions: the lightening of the heavy and the strengthening of the light.
And when He mentioned the few pillars, He followed them with the firm stakes and said: ﴿And He cast into the earth﴾ meaning the one you are upon, mountains ﴿firmly rooted﴾. And the wonder is from above it, and all the firmly rooted ones that you know are from below, stabilizing it from ﴿moving﴾ meaning swaying and being disturbed ﴿with you﴾ as is the case with what is on the surface of water.
And when He mentioned its creation and its arrangement for stability, He mentioned what it was created for from the animals, and He said: ﴿And He spread in it﴾ meaning He scattered ﴿from every living creature﴾. And when He mentioned that, He mentioned what lives by it, and He said, alerting to the manifestation of greatness, that this, even if they have some causation in it, no one can do it except Him, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And We sent down﴾ meaning with what we have of the necessary might for power. And He preceded what no creature has power over in any way, saying: ﴿from the sky water﴾. And when the management of provisions resulted from that, and it was from the effects of wisdom that follows action, He indicated it by His saying: ﴿So We caused to grow﴾ meaning with what we have of elevation in wisdom ﴿in it﴾ meaning the earth by mixing the water with its soil ﴿from every pair﴾ meaning type of plant that is similar ﴿noble﴾ with what it has of beauty and freshness that brings joy and benefit, and the abundance that preserves those creatures.
