Commentary
And when this was revealed to a people, most of them denied it, He, glorified and exalted is He, confirmed it with that which strengthens the hearts of His chosen ones by clarifying the intended meaning. He also silenced the tongues of His enemies from much of their obstinacy. He made them aware that just as He was truthful in this promise for the sake of delighting His allies, He will be truthful in the promise of the Hereafter to judge with justice and to take their rights from those who opposed them. He will then bestow upon them what He wills. He said: "The promise of Allah," meaning the one who possesses all attributes of perfection, and He is exalted above any blemish of deficiency. Therefore, "He does not fail." He repeated the mention of majesty to emphasize the greatness of the matter, saying: "Allah," meaning the one to whom belongs all command. And since He does not fail in anything of the promise, neither this which pertains to the affair of the Romans nor anything else, He made it clear, saying: "His promise," as His allies know. "But most people," who are the people of confusion and turmoil, "do not know," meaning they have no knowledge at all. Therefore, there is no consideration for them that leads to the understanding that it is a promise and that what He promised must certainly occur in the situation He mentioned, for He is capable and wise.
