Commentary
And when he described the ignorant, he followed it with the attribute of the scholars, saying: ﴿And those who﴾ [and] he expressed by saying: ﴿Were given knowledge﴾ a reminder of the gratitude of the One who granted it to them. He built it for the unknown, indicating the ease of obtaining it from the Majestic and the insignificant. He followed it with what does not obscure its lights and does not bring forth its fruits except for it, saying: ﴿and faith﴾ indicating their contemplation of all the clear and ambiguous signs, swearing as those swore, affirming their statement, confronting the criminals with reproach and admonition, confirming what those denied: ﴿Indeed, you remained in the Book of Allah﴾ meaning in the news of the decree of the One who has all perfection, which He wrote in His Book that He was informing about the world ﴿until the Day of Resurrection﴾ as He, the Exalted, said: ﴿And behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 100]. As for specifying the duration of the stay, He concealed it from His servants. When the Qur'an informed that the end of the barrier is resurrection, and it was truthful in its news, they caused from that His saying: ﴿So this﴾ meaning so what we used to say and you used to deny us in it, we now say to you where you cannot deny: this ﴿is the Day of Resurrection﴾ [meaning] which we believed in and you used to deny, it was according to what we [used to] say to you. Thus, the invalidity of your words has become clear, and you used to claim salvation in it with various types of falsehoods aimed at overcoming. So what could you do at its presence? Do it now, a reminder to them that there is no benefit in specifying the duration of stay in this world or in the barrier. The benefit is only in believing in what the Book informed where belief is beneficial. And when the decree came: it has come as we were knowledgeable of it, if you had a type of knowledge, you would have believed us in our news of it, and that would have benefited you now. He followed it with His saying: ﴿But you were﴾ meaning a state that is like your nature in your denial of it ﴿you do not know﴾ meaning you have no knowledge at all, due to your neglect in seeking knowledge from its doors and reaching it by its means. Therefore, you denied it and thus you deserved the recompense of that Day.
