Commentary
And when they were with the multitude of their passing by their dwellings, and their looking at their traces, and their hearing of their news, they did not take admonition. It was indicated that they are nothing, by diverting the address from them, and directing it to the obedient listener. So He said, causing what has passed from the establishment of evidence and admonition and fear: "So establish"; meaning, O one who does not understand from us the true understanding except him, for we have preferred him over all creation. "Your face"; meaning, do not turn it away at all "to the upright religion"; which has no deviation in it whatsoever, but it is entirely just, from disavowing idols to embracing the station of excellence. So adhere to it and make it before your eyes; do not neglect it, not even for the blink of an eye, because it is easy in what the assistance is caused by it in the apparent [with the statement that has no ambiguity, and in the hidden] by being steadfast upon it, until even the blind, the deaf, and the mute can accept it, and it becomes in it like a mountain in its firmness.
And when the preservation of uprightness is precious, He repeated the warning for the preservation of its people. So He said, facilitating the matter by not prolonging the time with the establishment of the neighbor, indicating contentment with a little of the action, even if it is an hour of the day, on the condition of connection with death: "before"; and He clarified the source for the statement, saying: "that a day"; meaning, a great day, which is the Day of Resurrection, or death. And He indicated His uniqueness, glorified and exalted is He, in the dominion by saying: "there is no turning back for it"; and the wording in the narration of Qunbul from the manifestation of greatness to something greater than it, due to the necessity of the station. [And He made it clear in the narration of the others so that it would not be thought that the pronoun returns to the religion, saying]: "from Allah"; and if He does not turn it back for His promise to bring it, and He is the Majestic and Generous, then who can turn it back?
And when He affirmed His coming, He detailed His matter, encouraging and frightening. So He said: "On that Day"; meaning, when it comes, "they will be scattered"; meaning, the creatures [all of them] will be divided into groups that may be hidden from some of them, as indicated by the merging. They will say: What is wrong with us that we do not see the men whom we used to count among the wicked?
