Commentary
And when I understood that the lack of concern for the world is because concern for it does not increase it, and neglecting it does not decrease it, it became clear that this only leads to hastening distress through toil and hardship. It was previously mentioned that a bad deed is one of the causes of destruction. This leads to spending it on its rights, turning away from it, signaling its humiliation, and being certain that this is its fulfillment, its investment, and its extraction. So he said specifically in addressing the greatest of those qualified to implement His commands, for this is more impactful on the souls of the followers, and more deserving of good acceptance from them and hearing: 'So give' O best of creation! 'the near relatives their due' beginning with them, for he is the most deserving of people of kindness, [connection] to the womb and generosity and nobility. 'And the poor' whether he is a relative or not, 'and the traveler' and he is the traveler likewise. The right that has been mentioned for both of them is apparent that it is intended for the optional, not the obligatory, due to the lack of mention of the remaining categories, and the poor is included from the first category.
And when He commanded to give, He encouraged it by saying: 'That' meaning the giving of the high rank 'is better.' And since He, glorified and exalted is He, is the richest of the rich, He does not accept except what is purely for His face, with no showing off in it. He said, defining that this is not limited to those who were specifically addressed, but everyone who emulates him will attain his blessing. 'For those who intend' in the plural form. And when the departure from wealth is extremely difficult, He encouraged it by mentioning the face which is the noblest of what is expressed here about the essence and [by repeating] the greatest name familiar to all creation. [He said]: 'the face of Allah' meaning the greatness of the Most High King, so they recognize from His right what diminishes for them compared to everything else, and they dedicate it to Him. 'And those' of high rank due to their independence from everything transient 'are' specifically 'the successful' [meaning] those whose success is not mixed with anything of disappointment. As for others, they are disappointed. As for the one who does not spend, it is clear. And as for the one who spends for the sake of showing off, for reputation and showing off, he has lost his wealth, and he has retained upon himself its burden. And as for the one who spends for the sake of true showing off, he has declared it, defining the enormity of his disgrace. (p-100) He diverted the address from the noble station that he was approaching, defining the purity of His status from it. And after that lofty aspiration and the pure, clean virtues from Him, to the direction of those from whom this is possible, he said:
