Commentary
﴿Did they not see﴾ meaning by observation and information, a repeated vision, [so they may know knowledge that is in its permanence like the observed tangible, and he expressed by vision that is suitable for sight and insight because the purpose of the surah is to affirm all matters to Allah, and it is not enough in it except for the exertion of effort and deep contemplation, and the context is for condemning despair, which is sufficient in the remaining observation for the difference of conditions, unlike the groups whose purpose is to indicate the truth of the promise, which is sufficient in it the absolute knowledge].
And when there is in expansion and contraction a combination of majesty and beauty, the speech is directed by mentioning the comprehensive name, so he said: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ with His majesty and greatness ﴿extends provision﴾ meaning increases it ﴿for whom He wills﴾ meaning from His servants, from them and from others ﴿and restricts﴾ meaning narrows it, and this is always His affair with the individual in successive times that are distant and close, and with individuals even if in the same time. If they had considered His state of contraction, glorified and exalted is He, they would not have been arrogant, and if they had considered His state of expansion, they would not have despaired. Rather, their state should be patience in affliction, and gratitude in ease, and refraining from the sin that the decree descended because of it, for they have known from their state that they are always constrained by the current condition.
They err in the repeated matters that are observed, so there is no wonder in their being constrained in denying resurrection by this worldly life.
And when it did not avail anyone of them in attracting provision [his strength] and the abundance of his intellect and the subtlety of his cunning [and the multitude of] his tricks, nor did his weakness and lack of intellect and inability of his trick harm him, and this was a great matter and a hidden delicate inclination as some of them said:
How many a wise one whose ways have exhausted him ∗∗∗ and a fool whom you find provided.
He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated His greatness by His saying, confirming that their actions, in their intense concern for striving in this world, are the actions of one who thinks that attaining it is only according to the effort put into the means: "Indeed, in that" refers to the great matter of being in need at one time and being enriched at another, and the expansion for one person and the restriction for another, and the security from the loss of the present blessings while witnessing the loss in oneself and others, and the despair of obtaining them during trials despite the frequent occurrence of relief and other secrets of the verse. "Indeed, there are signs" means clear indications of the oneness of Allah, the Most High, the completeness of knowledge, and the perfection of power, and that there is no doer in reality except Him. However, "for a people" means those of high aspirations and capability to fulfill what is right for them to engage in. "Who believe" means they establish this description and continuously renew it at all times due to the ongoing evidence that comes to them, by maintaining contemplation and deep reflection, and relying for sustenance on the One who said, "And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy to remember, so is there any who will remember?" [Al-Qamar: 17], meaning from the seekers of knowledge, so they are aided in it. They do not rejoice in the blessings when they occur, fearing their loss if the Omnipotent wills, nor do they grieve over them when they are lost, hoping for their return as a favor from the Provider, because "the best form of worship is to await relief." Rather, they are preoccupied with their duties of obligatory and recommended worship, turning away from anything else. They have entrusted the matter of sustenance to the One who has taken charge of it, completed its distribution, and guaranteed it, and He is the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.
