Commentary
And when this action was something that only a person of extreme foolishness or stubbornness would do, and they claimed that they were the wisest of people, it raised them from the status of folly to a state where madness is better than it, mocking them. So He said: ﴿Let them disbelieve in what﴾ and He turned the speech to the manifestation of greatness, saying: ﴿We have given them﴾ meaning from the mercy that, due to its greatness, only We can grant it, as a protection from them falling into another severe situation, so that We destroy them for what has angered Us, or as a means by which We may save them whenever they fall into similar situations. How misguided their minds are and how foolish their opinions!
And when their action was a cause for the utmost anger, He indicated this by threatening them, turning to the address with His saying: ﴿So enjoy﴾ meaning with what you desired in it of associating partners by gathering at the idols and your connection with them and your affection towards them. And the consequence of this enjoyment was His saying: ﴿So you will surely know﴾ meaning there will be for you, by a promise that cannot be broken, knowledge, so you will know when calamity befalls you and the disliked surrounds you all, whether anything from the idols will benefit you or from whom you have taken as a supporter by worshipping them and agreeing with them in drawing closer to them.
