And when it became clear from this separation from every rational being that most of creation is misguided, the situation was worthy of questioning about the means of salvation from this misguidance. It was indicated that it is necessary to adhere to gathering together. This was clarified in a present participle from the doer of "joyful". Allah, the Most High, said: "And when". The original was: "He touched them", but it was said [because it is more appropriate to the purpose of the Surah to limit that to humans, as is the custom in most Surahs or otherwise from the types of the world]: "He touched the people" to strengthen the intention of generality [indicating all those who have the capacity for movement, from mute animals and inanimate objects; if they were to speak, then they would be agitated and would turn towards Him, glorified and exalted is He, and would not deviate from Him, just as they are now with the tongues of their states. This is the consensus that cannot be imagined to have any dispute with it]. (p-92) "In distress they called upon their Lord" means the One who has no partner in doing good to them [during all the duration of their being touched by that distress - as indicated by the context] - while they were in a state of being "turning back". This means returning from all their misguidances that separated them from Him, "to Him" [Ar-Rum: 31], knowing that there is no relief for them from anything other than Him. This is the habit of all, and no one among them deviates from it at any time or during any crisis. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawami' at the end of Al-Ankabut: And this is evidence that the knowledge of the Lord is in the nature of every human being, and that if they are heedless in times of ease, there is no doubt that they will turn to Him in times of distress.
And when every occurrence in hardship makes escape from it seem impossible, He said: "Then" with the tool of distance, "when He causes them to taste" [attributing mercy to Him, magnifying the etiquette even though all of it is from Him]. And when the entire context is for the Oneness of Allah, the attention to the worshipped One by His name and pronoun is more complete. He said: "from Him", presenting His pronoun, indicating by the precedence of the preposition over the specification that none other than Him is capable of it. And He said: "as a mercy", meaning salvation from that distress, indicating that if He were to seize them for their sins, He would destroy them. Thus, there is no reason for His grace except for His generosity, and it indicates the severity of their hastiness in denying the good by His saying, expressing with the tool of surprise: "Then a group of them" means a faction that is deserving of departing from the truth "with their Lord" means the One who always does good to them, renewing for them (p-93) this goodness from that distress, "they associate partners" instead of what was necessary for them, which is that they should be grateful. So it became clear that the truth that cannot be deviated from is repentance in every situation to Him, as they all agreed in times of hardships upon Him, and that anything else that separated them is misguidance, which cannot be equated with anything nor can anything be equal to it.
