That is because it is not possible for something to be characterized by negating something and affirming it at the same time. So He said, replacing: "from those who divided" when they separated from "their religion" which is the original nature. Each group among them worshiped something and followed a religion other than the religion of others. This is the meaning of "and they were" meaning by their effort and diligence in that separating division "parties" (p-91) meaning factions allied together, each one of them supporting whoever adheres to its religion against those who oppose them, until some of them declared others to be disbelievers and permitted bloodshed and property. It was certainly known that they are all not upon the truth.
