Commentary

And when there were among the people some whom Allah had favored by having them in this arena, and their ambition was to compete with the knights, when he saw that he was not being noticed, and that they did not rely on him at all, his soul nearly flew away. And it was the custom of the people to address the people for the sake of addressing their leader, in honor of him and urging them to adorn themselves with what he had specifically. Their hearts were mended and their chests were opened, so a state was clarified to them from the meaning of 'Establish' or from the agent in 'Fitrah', informing them that they are intended by the address, pointed out to them with correctness. So he said: ﴿Returning﴾, meaning returning again and again by engaging the soul and the original fitrah ﴿to Him﴾, the Exalted, by turning away from what you have acquired of bad morals to that sound fitrah that submits to the evidence, inclined to the straight path.

And when there was nothing left after returning to the clear path except the command to adhere to it, out of fear of straying from it, as was the habit of the first time. He said, adding to ﴿So establish﴾ [Ar-Rum: 30] ﴿And fear Him﴾, meaning fear that you may stray from His path, lest He deliver you into the hands of those misguiders. So if you fear Him and adhere to it, you would be among those who have abandoned vices ﴿And establish prayer﴾, you will become among those who have adorned themselves with virtues - thus is the way of religion always: first, abandonment, then adornment: the first entry into Islam is purification, and the first entry into the Qur'an is seeking refuge, and this is a clear and rational matter. Its example is that whoever wants to write something, if he wipes away what is written in it, he benefits from what he has written, otherwise he corrupts the first and does not read the second. And Allah is the Grantor of success.

And when shirk (associating partners with Allah) is from the evil in a way that is not for anything else, He emphasized the prohibition against it by saying: ﴿And do not be﴾, meaning be not in any way ﴿of the polytheists﴾, meaning do not be among those who enter into their count by friendship, companionship, or actions that resemble them. For indeed, 'Whoever resembles a people is one of them.' And this is general for all shirk, whether it is by worshiping an idol, or fire, or others, or by adhering to what contradicts the texts from the sayings of the scholars and monks and others.
