28He (Allah) gives you an example from yourselves: Do you have, from among your slaves, any partners in the wealth that We have given to you, so as they and you are equal in it, (and) so as you fear them like you fear each other? This is how We explain the signs for a people who understand.

Commentary

And when it became clear from this that He is the sole possessor of sovereignty with the fullness of knowledge, the completeness of power, and the perfection of wisdom, His saying connected with the goodness of His examples and the precision of His words and actions is: ﴿He has set forth for you﴾, meaning by His wisdom regarding the matter of idols and the clarification of the invalidity of those who associate partners with Him and the corruption of their words in the clearest form of affirmation: ﴿an example﴾ beginning with ﴿from yourselves﴾, which is the closest of things to you. So you are more deserving of understanding what you are reminded of.

And when the essence of the example is that a slave cannot be equal to his master, and the affirmation is closer to remembrance and further from repulsion, He said, denying, reproaching, and affirming: ﴿Do you have﴾, meaning O you who worship alongside Allah some of His servants ﴿any of what﴾, meaning of some of what ﴿your right hands possess﴾, meaning of the slaves or maidservants who are humans like you. And He included in the negation that which is intended by the questioning with the addition of the preposition by saying: ﴿of partners﴾, meaning in a condition of conditions that would allow you to make partners with Allah. And He pointed out what is in the provision's creation and then its distribution among the creation and other matters of His by saying: turning after a long expression with the absence that one might imagine with it after - to speaking with the pronoun indicating closeness to greatness and the pleasure of engaging in addressing: ﴿in what We have provided you﴾, meaning for what is ours of greatness from wealth or status along with the weakness of your ownership in it.

And when partnership is a cause for the equality of the two partners in the shared matter, He said: ﴿So you﴾, meaning O assembly of free men and slaves. And when it might be imagined that "of partners" is a description for children from their concubines, He preceded the connection to dispel that by saying: ﴿in it﴾, meaning the thing in which the partnership occurred from that provision specifically and not anything else from lineage or nobility and the like [or weakness in body or heart or length in lifespan and the like, and as for their children from the concubines, they might equal them in that and other matters of lineage and the like, and the slaves might equal them in bodily strength and longevity or even surpass them]. ﴿Equal﴾. Then He clarified the equality which is that the ruling of one of the two parties in the shared matter is equal to the ruling of the other, and neither of them has superiority over the other in anything by saying: ﴿You fear them﴾, meaning O assembly of masters in the management of that shared matter.

[And when the tool of comparison is more indicative, He affirmed it and said]: ﴿like your fear of yourselves﴾, meaning just as you fear some of those with whom you share, who are equal to you in freedom and greatness, that you may act in the shared matter in a way that does not please him and without his permission. Thus, it became clear that your situation regarding your slaves is an example [for you] in those whom you have associated with Him, clarifying its invalidity. So if you do not accept this for yourselves, which is that your slaves should be equal to you in ownership, how can you accept it for your Creator in these partners that you claim, equating them with Him while they are among the weakest of His creation? Do you not feel ashamed?

And when this example was at the pinnacle of perfection, the listener was worthy of saying: Glory be to Allah! How high is the status of this statement! Does it clarify everything like this? So he said: ﴿Thus﴾ meaning like this high statement ﴿We detail﴾ meaning we clarify, for detailing is distinguishing and it is clarification, and that is in a great manner - as indicated by the strengthening along with renewal and continuity: ﴿the signs﴾ meaning the clear evidences.

And when the clarification does not benefit the one who is deprived, he said: ﴿For a people who understand﴾ indicating that if they do not act according to what is required, they would be insane, for the representation reveals the meanings through imagery and formation in a way that leaves no ambiguity, so whoever it is hidden from, he has no distinction.
