Commentary

And when he mentioned the scarcity and the shade and those within them, and some of their necessary attributes, he mentioned what arises from each of those of the separate attributes. He said: ﴿And among His signs﴾ meaning [upon] that and other types of power and knowledge ﴿is your sleep﴾ meaning your sleep and its place and time that overcomes you to the extent that you cannot resist it.

And when the night is the place of dwelling, rest, and sleep, he mentioned what he made of the sleep of the day as well, for that is more indicative of action by testing. He said: ﴿By night and day﴾ meaning the two arising from the heavens and the earth by the difference of movements that do not arise except from a chosen doer, and your cessation by sleep from your livelihood [and all that concerns you] and your rising after your sleep is a compelling matter from which you cannot detach from either one of them at all. ﴿And your seeking﴾ meaning your request with diligence and effort ﴿of His bounty﴾ in livelihood in both of them. The verse is from the interweaving: the mention of sleep indicates the rising from it, and the seeking indicates the cessation from it, having omitted the end of the first and the beginning of the second. ﴿Indeed, in that﴾ meaning in the great matter of the high rank of creating sleep after activity, and activity after sleep, which is the lesser death, and the creation of each of the two after their annihilation, and the diligence in seeking along with the difference in attainment ﴿are signs﴾ meaning numerous signs of power and wisdom, especially resurrection.

And when these signs indicate what they refer to of resurrection and action by choice in a precise manner that the intellect cannot independently grasp without guidance from the callers, for sleep and seeking may be attributed to the servants and do not go beyond that to the Creator except for individuals among the pure servants. And the sleeper rises with a clear mind, empty of secrets, and active in body. He said: ﴿For a people who listen﴾ meaning from the sincere advising callers, the hearing of one who has awakened from his sleep, for his body is at rest, active, and his heart is free from anything that disturbs the advice and prevents acceptance, or the meaning is: for a people who are worthy of hearing by being awakened from their slumber, so they return from their stubbornness, indicating that whoever does not reflect on these signs is asleep, not awake. Thus, he is not qualified to hear.
